Germany has introduced a fully digital visa application system, the Consular Services Portal, to tackle its skilled labour shortage.

The country is looking to recruit 400,000 foreign workers in 2025 across key industries, including healthcare, technology, and manufacturing.

The new digital system allows applicants to submit visa applications entirely online, eliminating the need for in-person appointments and paperwork. Available in 167 visa offices worldwide, it aims to reduce delays and streamline the process for skilled professionals, students, and apprentices.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock highlighted that attracting international talent is crucial to sustaining Germany’s economy and ensuring its competitiveness on the global stage.

Sectors in high demand

Several industries in Germany are experiencing a significant labour shortage:

  • Skilled Trades – Construction workers, electricians, plumbers, mechanics
  • Healthcare – Nurses, caregivers, medical technicians
  • Technology – Software engineers, cybersecurity experts, AI specialists
  • Manufacturing & Engineering – Automotive technicians, industrial workers
  • Logistics & Transport – Truck drivers, warehouse staff
  • Hospitality & Tourism – Chefs, hotel managers, restaurant workers
